Digressed

December 18, 2004: Come get some orange juice, it’s great.

I had some driving time a few weeks ago. As much as I’d love to live in a city where I wouldn’t need a car, there’s something neat about spending time on the road listening to music, enjoying new sights and even using the time to think. City traffic I could never put up with but road trips I itch for once in a while. So I took advantage of a temporary hop between projects that sent me to North Carolina four times between October and November and chose to hit the road the last trek to get a break from planes.

My favorite part about solo road trips is being able to crank up the music, ride with the windows down, the tops off (weather-permitting) and enjoy those moments where a song seems to fit the surroundings. Moments like when the clouds cover up the sky and a light rain starts such as one I last experienced on the way back when Girls by Death in Vegas came on. And just when I thought it couldn’t be any more fitting, as the song began to fade, the clouds dispersing and the sun carving through, Röyksopp’s Remind me kicked on. It was like I was in a movie.

I’ve talked to my roommate about this and we usually agree on songs that tend to fit moments really well while driving. About a year ago he was fascinated with Underworld’s Jumbo. So much, in fact, that he got pulled over and got himself a ticket, the poor guy. We still agree it is a beautiful song. However, we also agree that even more captivating is Sola Sistim:

My eyes burn naked,
my black cold numbers,
my insecurities,
my devious nature,
make it go away.

If anything good comes out of the bad times is that we hopefully learn to appreciate the good ones. And then hopefully everyone is able to reach moments in life where things are good enough to not take the tidbits for granted. As Sara likes to say: it’s the little things in life.

My friends, I love them to death. It’s been fun sparking their curiosity (albeit, not purposely) with the news of the new girl. As Alex said, it caught everyone by surprise. Everyone’s dying to meet her but it’s going to take a little planning since she doesn’t live in town and I’m hardly there to being with.

But anyways, Kevin, Jeff and Pam recently cracked me up when they mentioned it’d be nice if they had a way to know where I was so they could, for example, call me when I’m in town. It’s been a while since I had to let my mom know what I was up to every day and now I have this? Ok, so I actually found the whole thing pretty funny and I went ahead and humored them. So there you have it, folks: the handy side bar now tells you where I currently find myself. You better find another excuse when you forget to call, blizz-atches.

This is why I could never have kids: I’d spoil them rotten.
